LONDON

David Beckham has officially been knighted in the King’s Birthday Honours. The former England football captain, global brand ambassador, and philanthropist has been recognised for his services to sport and charity — elevating him from OBE, awarded in 2003, to the more ceremonious title of Sir David.

Over the past two decades, Beckham has managed a rare transformation — from sporting superstar to fully-fledged national figure. Whether in a sharply tailored suit at fashion week or pictured pitchside in a flat cap, he has positioned himself as a quietly enduring symbol of modern British influence.

Supporters of the honour point to Beckham’s extensive philanthropic efforts. His long-standing role with UNICEF as a goodwill ambassador, his advocacy for military veterans, and his instrumental part in securing the 2012 London Olympics all contributed to the weight of his candidacy. Gary Oldman and Roger Daltrey were also knighted in the King's Birthday Honours.

Beckham, 50, is married to his wife, Victoria Beckham, AKA Posh from the Spice Girls. Together, they share four children – Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper.
