HONG KONG

Season 4 of Bridgerton has become one of the show’s most talked‑about instalments yet — not just for its Cinderella‑inspired storyline, but for the fresh faces joining the Ton. Among them are three actresses with meaningful connections to Hong Kong: Katie Leung, Michelle Mao and Isabella Wei. Each brings a distinct energy to their roles — and in interviews, they’ve shared personal reflections on life, craft and what it means to be part of this global hit.

Katie Leung (Lady Araminta Gun)

Best known for her breakthrough role as Cho Chang in the Harry Potter films, Scottish actress Katie Leung brings both gravitas and complexity to Bridgerton’s Lady Araminta Gun.

Leung has discussed her Hong Kong roots in interviews. “During my teenage years I did enjoy partying a lot. Hong Kong was a great place to party," Leung told The Herald Scotland. "I enjoyed the weather and it was bustling, with so much culture. I went four times in a year, which is pretty insane given it is a 16-hour flight from Scotland."

And while she hasn’t spoken at length publicly about Hong Kong in the context of Bridgerton, Leung’s own background — born in Scotland to a father from Hong Kong and a mother who moved back there when she was young — has shaped her perspective as a performer and public figure. Since Harry Potter, Leung’s résumé has broadened to include TV series such as Annika and voice work in Arcane, showing her range far beyond fantasy franchises.

Michelle Mao (Rosamund Li)

Michelle Mao plays Rosamund Li, the elder daughter who competes for Benedict Bridgerton’s attention with a mix of poise and prickliness.

Raised in Hong Kong and Beijing after being born in Tennessee, Mao’s journey to Bridgerton includes a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from the University of California, Berkley and a master’s degree from Beijing’s Tsinghua University.

In a People Magazine interview, Mao spoke candidly about the fan reaction to her role — both positive and critical. “It’s the first time people are meeting me,” she said. “I’m getting better at not letting it get to me and just holding onto the idea that it just means you did a good job as an actor.”

She also pointed out that speaking some Cantonese on the show and seeing cultural touches in set design — from interior elements to language on screen — was “kind of surreal,” highlighting how her heritage finds subtle expression in the series. Before Bridgerton, Mao has appeared in projects such as A Big Bold Beautiful Journey and the Sundance film Zi, directed by Kogonada and shot in Hong Kong.

Isabella Wei (Posy Li)

Hong Kong‑born Isabella Wei plays Posy Li, the younger of the Gun‑Li sisters and a fan favourite for her warmth and gentle humour. Wei grew up in Hong Kong, attending Chinese International School and training as a dancer with the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation before pivoting to acting.

In a Vogue Hong Kong interview, she described what it felt like stepping onto Bridgerton’s set for the first time — especially the iconic masquerade ball scene — calling it “an unbelievable experience” and something she had once only dreamed of. Wei also spoke thoughtfully about representation: “Bridgerton does a lot without making ethnicity or race the main factor in the story,” she said, noting that having moments where characters speak languages like Cantonese — even briefly — felt “very special.” Her screen credits before Bridgerton include Netflix’s 1899, the spy thriller Black Doves and the remake of The Crow.
