  • Billy Evans, Elizabeth Holmes' long-term partner, is a central figure in the new A24 documentary You Can See Everything.

  • The MIT graduate and hotel heir runs Haemanthus, a blood-testing start-up that has been dubbed "Theranos 2.0".

  • The couple share two children and, despite being called husband and wife, have never legally married.

Elizabeth Holmes is in a Texas prison, but it is her partner, Billy Evans, who has become the talking point of the season. The hotel heir is a central figure in You Can See Everything, the new A24 documentary from Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, released in cinemas this month.

The film shows Evans running a new blood-testing start-up, managing Holmes' social media and, at one point, demanding a share of the film's profits in exchange for access, Inc. reported. Evans has defended taking part. Appearing on the All-In podcast, he admitted Holmes looks "insane" in the trailer but said the film's purpose was "to have people see who she is," per Variety. Here is what we know about him.

What is Billy Evans' Background?

William "Billy" Evans grew up in San Diego, the eldest of three children. His grandparents opened a hotel on Mission Bay in 1953 that grew into Evans Hotels, a family company with three properties in Southern California. The company said this month that Evans is neither an employee nor a shareholder, The New York Times reported. He attended San Diego's Francis Parker School, then the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he played on the volleyball team and graduated in 2015 with an economics degree.

What Does Billy Evans Do for Work?

He is the chief executive of Haemanthus, a diagnostics start-up based in Austin, Texas. Earlier versions of his LinkedIn profile listed a role at lidar company Luminar Technologies from 2017 to 2019, according to Forbes. Haemanthus is developing a countertop device that uses lasers, through a technique called Raman spectroscopy, to analyse blood, urine and saliva. It plans to start with pets before moving to humans, The New York Times reported in 2025.

The company has been dubbed "Theranos 2.0". It has insisted it is not, and a source told NPR that Holmes did not plan to take a formal role. In the documentary, however, Evans accepts the label, and the couple are shown on fundraising calls together, according to Wired. Evans argues the comparison is lazy. "It's a lot easier to make it seem like Elizabeth Holmes is El Chapo running a diagnostics cartel from prison than it is to say Billy's building a nerdy company," he said in a recent interview, as reported by BigGo Finance.

Are Elizabeth Holmes and Billy Evans Married?

Not legally, despite often being described as husband and wife. They met in 2017 at a Fleet Week event in San Francisco, while Holmes was under federal investigation, and got engaged in 2018, according to A&E. Evans proposed soon after the couple saw Taylor Swift's Reputation tour, with a snake ring bought at the concert, TV Insider reported. Vanity Fair reported that they held a private wedding ceremony later that year, but the couple have said they never officially married. That has not stopped Evans using the word. Asked directly whether he was Holmes' husband, he once replied: "Yes, Elizabeth Holmes is my wife, and best friend, and partner."

“Maybe we’ll get married someday. But our bond is more than a piece of paper,” Holmes told People. “We bought rings on Amazon before I went to prison. It’s just special to me because our love is deep. It’s real.”

Do Elizabeth Holmes and Billy Evans Have Children?

Yes, two. Their son William was born in July 2021, which delayed Holmes' fraud trial, and their daughter Invicta was born in 2023. Evans lives in Austin with the children and regularly visits Holmes at Federal Prison Camp Bryan. Before her 2022 sentencing, he wrote to the judge: "My heart is broken with the thought of spending any days away from Liz," A&E reported.

When Will Elizabeth Holmes be Released?

Holmes began an 11-year sentence for fraud in May 2023. She is scheduled to move to a halfway house in August 2027, Yahoo Sports reported. Evans has claimed that credits under the First Step Act could bring that forward to the second quarter of 2027.

What Controversies Has the Documentary Raised?

Several. Fielder said communication with Evans broke down late in production, and neither Evans nor Holmes has seen the finished film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A source close to Evans has also told People that he felt his trust was violated by a full-frontal nude scene that he believed would stay PG. "The shower scene wasn't Billy's idea," the source said, per Yahoo Entertainment. The film also shows Evans controlling an AI avatar of Holmes, which he says his power of attorney allows.
