Japanese Healing Meets TCM at Chi Yu: A Personalised Wellness Experience in London

LONDON

Japanese and Traditional Chinese Medicine rarely sit side by side in London's wellness scene. At Chi Yu Wellness Centre in Marylebone, the two traditions come together in an approach that considers the whole person, body, mind and energy, rather than treating each as a separate concern.

That was what initially caught my attention, because I often wonder if the ache in my shoulder or the stress I feel can be treated in a more “whole person” way than a traditional spa day. I had come to experience two of Chi Yu's signature treatments in one bespoke 90-minute session, Chi Yu Integrated Therapy followed by the Ancestral Japanese Facial. The combination felt rather more interesting to me than the usual spa menu of massage, facial, lovely though those are, I am always open to treatments that weave in ancient forms of healing.

Chi Yu has been established for 17 years, and behind it is Mami Tsang, who has 25 years of experience practising and qualified in acupuncture at the University of Westminster in 2007. Her approach draws on Traditional Chinese Medicine and Japanese whole-person philosophy, alongside a range of complementary therapies.

Talking to Mami, it quickly becomes clear that the techniques are only part of the story. She believes the body has the ability to heal itself, and that her role is to encourage that process gently rather than force it. “Don’t force; suggest,” she tells me. It sounds simple, yet it informs the entire experience.

Mami works with both men and women, and there is no single treatment prescribed for everyone. The starting point is the individual, what they need, how they are feeling and what the body may be asking for. She also works with young people and teens, including those who are feeling stress and overwhelm. “If you push too hard, the body will go into defensive mode,” she says. It is a particularly interesting philosophy at a time when wellness can sometimes feel like another form of achievement. We are encouraged to optimise, improve and push through. Mami's approach is almost the reverse.

Her practice is based in protection, acceptance and providing emotional safety so her clients can start the healing process under her expert care. “My work created a space and a feeling that it’s safe to let go and heal,” she says.

What to Expect at Chi Yu

My treatment began with Chi Yu Integrated Therapy, the centre's core holistic treatment. This is a bespoke complementary therapy rather than a fixed sequence, with the therapist assessing your requirements before devising a treatment specifically for you.

Depending on what is appropriate, the treatment can incorporate different modalities including aromatherapy, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, acupressure, meridian massage and reflexology.

That flexibility is central to the Chi Yu approach. You don’t just choose a treatment from a menu and have the same sequence performed as the person before you. There is a detailed TCM-style consultation before the treatment is designed around your individual needs. For me, that meant full-body acupuncture alongside a full-body massage, with specific oils selected around my individual wellness priorities.

For my visit, it was followed by the Ancestral Japanese Facial, a 90-minute experience that moved naturally between Chi Yu's holistic approach and traditional Japanese facial massage.

The facial is rooted in the Kobido technique and is considerably more massage-focused than the sort of facial that revolves around layers of products. The emphasis is on hands-on treatment, with techniques intended to lift, sculpt and revive the skin. Expect plenty of dreamy facial massage and skin that looks fresher and more lifted afterwards.

The combination worked particularly well, and I felt so relaxed afterwards. The first treatment encouraged me to slow down and settle, the facial continued that feeling, with the massage providing a natural continuation rather than a complete change of pace.

The room itself helped. Chi Yu is cosy, warm and intimate, rather than feeling like a large, high-turnover spa, and there is a sense of being removed from the pace of Marylebone outside. Mami tells me that this was one of the reasons she chose the space in the first place. “I felt something when I first saw this building,” she says. It was cosy and safe. Seventeen years later, that feeling remains central to the centre. After spending 90 minutes there, I understood why. I left feeling calmer than when I arrived, not dramatically transformed and certainly not “fixed”, but less achy, more grounded and much calmer.

The Chi Yu Philosophy

What struck me as unique about Chi Yu Wellness Centre is Mami's personal perspective on healing.

There is something reassuring about the idea that treatment doesn't have to be about forcing the body to do something. Instead of relying on a very firm massage to get that stubborn knot out of your shoulder, a gentler approach can also be used to encourage the body to respond. Sometimes it is about giving it the right conditions to do so. That is where the combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Japanese philosophy becomes particularly interesting. Rather than focusing solely on an isolated physical concern, Chi Yu takes a whole-person approach, considering the relationship between body, mind and energy.

After 25 years of practising, Mami has developed a way of working that feels considered rather than prescriptive. Listen first, suggest rather than force, create a sense of safety, and let the body do some of the work.

For me, that is the distinction between Chi Yu and a traditional spa. There is nothing wrong with booking a massage because you want to switch off for an hour, or a facial because you want your skin to look good before an event. Chi Yu is for when you want those things, but you also want the treatment to have a reason behind it, with the experience shaped around you rather than simply selected from a menu.

For anyone looking for holistic therapy in London that sits outside the conventional spa experience, Chi Yu brings Japanese healing and Traditional Chinese Medicine together in a highly personalised setting in Marylebone, with treatments designed to consider the person as a whole rather than one particular ache, stress point or beauty concern.
