With the increasing uncertainty of COVID-19, Hong Kongers are bound to the city for the summer. On the bright side, it’s a great time to explore hidden gems you probably haven’t come across before. Part of National Hotels, The Jervois is an understated luxury boutique in hipster Sheung Wan, offering a minimalist, modern aesthetic and a staycation deal for a weekend trip.
Location
The Jervois is located in the trendy Sheung Wan neighbourhood, where old-meets-new, from stores to restaurants. Only minutes away from Soho—one of the main dining destinations of Hong Kong—the hotel is conveniently perched near Central, in a more intimate, peaceful area.
Design
The hotel is designed by French designer Christian Liaigre, who aims for simplicity, elegance, and comfort in his designs. Liaigre also did the home interiors for world-renowned Calvin Klein and Karl Lagerfield, to name a few. Suites are entered via private lift lobbies and each accommodation features large, sunlit-attracting windows. All the furnishings are custom-made, reflecting warm tones of wood, leather, and fabric, with touches of marble.
The Room
We stayed in the One-Bedroom Suite for one night, a spacious and comfortable room with all the necessary amenities within arm’s reach. There is a 24-hour gym and self-service laundry rooms within the hotel. The art on the walls makes a homey touch to the otherwise minimalistic, modern space. We loved the kitchen, which featured a Nespresso machine and a range of teas.
The Facilities
Although the hotel doesn’t have any in-house restaurants, the concierge is more than happy to recommend their partner restaurants for breakfast options within walking distance (less than five minutes away each). Breakfast restaurants include Ask Cafe, Cafe Life Patisserie & Cafe, Barista Jam, The Cottage, House of Dim Sum, and Kaffeine—catering to all palettes from dim sum to classic eggs on toast. There is 24-hour security with card access to the elevators and guest rooms. There is also the gym and self-service laundry facilities available in the building. Guests can also request laundry services at an additional cost.
Overall
Like its partner properties, One96 and 99 Bonham, The Jervois maintains the top-quality standards of the National Hotels group. The boutique hotel has an inviting and friendly atmosphere, and the facilities, although minimal, are perfect for short business layovers or even long-term serviced apartment living. The cost is very reasonable and guests can expect sleek, contemporary design in every suite.
