Long before she became the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle was married to Hollywood producer Trevor Engelson — a relationship that ended years before she ever met Prince Harry, but one that still resurfaces in headlines every so often.

Who Is Trevor Engelson?

Engelson, born in New York in 1976, is an American film and television producer. His LinkedIn profile states that he studied at Great Neck North from 1990 to 1994, and then the University of Southern California from 1994 to 1998. According to Yahoo Entertainment, he's worked primarily behind the camera throughout his career, with producing credits including the 2010 Robert Pattinson drama Remember Me — in which Meghan had a small cameo — as well as the FX series Snowfall and The After Party. He also runs Underground Films, his own production and management company.

How Did They Meet, and How Long Were They Together?

Engelson and Markle met in 2004, and dated for around seven years before marrying. According to In Touch Weekly, the two married in a beachside ceremony at the Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on August 16, 2011. Markle was still an emerging actress at the time, having not yet landed her breakout role on Suits.

Why Did They Split?

The marriage lasted about two years, with the couple separating in 2013 and finalizing their divorce in 2014, officially citing "irreconcilable differences." According to Grazia, some reports have pointed to the strain of Markle's Suits role filming in Toronto while Engelson's career kept him based in Los Angeles as a contributing factor.

What Happened After the Divorce?

Following their split, Engelson briefly dated model Charlotte McKinney before eventually meeting Tracey Kurland, a dietitian and heiress to a mortgage-industry fortune. Engelson and Kurland married in 2019 and welcomed a son, Logan Stanford Engelson, in early 2025.

Has He Ever Spoken About Meghan and Harry?

Engelson has largely kept a strict no-comment policy when it comes to his ex-wife. According to Yahoo Entertainment, reality TV personality Bethenny Frankel has recounted asking Engelson, when Harry and Meghan's relationship first became public in 2016, whether he thought "she'll close" — meaning end up marrying the prince. His reported reply: "Oh, she'll close."

According to a New York Post report, Engelson had also been developing a television pitch loosely inspired by his marriage to Markle, centered on a man whose ex-wife leaves him for a British prince — a project reportedly shelved at Markle's request shortly before her royal wedding.

By most accounts, Engelson has built a stable, largely private life well outside the spotlight his ex-wife now occupies, continuing his production career while raising his family with Kurland in Los Angeles.
