Formula 1 fans got a major off-track headline this week: Mercedes driver George Russell is engaged to his longtime girlfriend, Carmen Montero Mundt, after six years together.
Who Is Carmen Montero Mundt?
Montero Mundt, 28, is Spanish-born and moved to London at 18 to pursue higher education, earning a degree in business management and finance from the University of Westminster. Despite becoming a familiar presence in the Formula 1 paddock over the years, she has maintained a professional identity well outside the sport.

What Does Carmen Montero Mundt Do for Work?
Montero Mundt works in finance and investment management, and earlier this year co-founded a skincare brand called Barriers alongside co-founder Óscar Valls Bartolomé. The brand is built around a philosophy of treating skin as, in the founders' words, "a living system that requires balance, consistency, and formulas that work in harmony with its own biology," rather than something to aggressively correct. Speaking about why they started the brand, Valls and Montero Mundt told National Law Review: "We created Barriers because we felt that skincare had become filled with noise, excess, and quick solutions. We wanted to return to a more honest idea of care." The brand made a notable public appearance at the Miami Grand Prix earlier this year, tying its launch directly to the F1 world Montero Mundt already moves through.

How Did Carmen Montero Mundt and George Russell Meet?
Russell and Montero Mundt met in London in 2020, when both were 22. She told Tatler about the setup that led to their first meeting: a Spanish friend invited her to join a casual drink at Soho House in White City, explaining the man she was dating wanted to bring his flatmate along. "It was a Sunday night, and my friend was like, 'I'm dating this guy and he wants to bring his flatmate for a drink... I thought he was really funny," she said. Russell was that flatmate. He later asked her friend for her number and invited her to his home, where he cooked for her — the beginning of what became a six-year relationship, one that saw her by his side through his move from Williams to Mercedes and his rise to one of the grid's top drivers.

She's Been There Through His Rise to the Top
Montero Mundt has accompanied Russell through the biggest swings of his career, from his early days at Williams through his move to Mercedes and his emergence as one of the sport's most consistent frontrunners. She's a regular presence at race weekends, and Russell has credited her directly with helping him manage the pressure of the job.

The Proposal
Russell proposed during an intimate, candlelit dinner beside the beach, with the couple announcing the engagement on Instagram on August 9 with a ring emoji and white heart. Photos from the post showed Montero Mundt displaying an oval yellow diamond ring, estimated by jewellery experts at eight to ten carats and potentially valued upward of $1 million.
The proposal came roughly two months after Russell had already spoken publicly about their future together. He told The Times, "Carmen brings me stability when it comes to racing and also a way to disconnect," before stating plainly, "Without doubt she's my future. It won't be next week, but it won't be longer than five years. So somewhere in that timeframe."

Reaction From the Paddock
The engagement quickly drew a wave of public congratulations from across Formula 1, including from Russell's Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, who wrote "Congratulations to you both, mate," Alpine's Pierre Gasly, and the official Mercedes, Williams, and Formula 1 accounts. The announcement post reportedly gathered more than 500,000 likes within its first hour.
