HONG KONG
CSP Times checks into Hopewell Hotel, one of Hong Kong’s largest five-star hotels. Situated in the heart of Wan Chai, it offers convenient access to most districts. Its location inside Hopewell Mall also gives it accessibility to many shops and restaurants.

Hong Kong has no shortage of luxury, five-star hotels. I’ve stayed in a few of them. But at times, it gets to a point when you feel the grandeur is too facetious. That’s where Hopewell Hotel comes in. It’s simple yet elegant, minimal yet sleek, convenient, and modern all rolled into one.

The Arrival
I’m sceptical at first because it’s quite a walk to get to the entrance of the hotel. I pass by Hopewell Mall and its many shops. But that is one of the hotel’s charms. Its strategic location inside the mall allows guests more options for sightseeing, exploration, and shopping. There is also a backdoor (or lesser-known entrance) that takes you past all the walking.
The first thing I notice is how centralised the lobby is. Restaurants on one side, large sofas in the middle for guests to wait, and the reception on the other. Further, there are more: column-free meeting and convention spaces. It’s an unrivalled convenience on one floor. Despite that, everything looks orderly. It’s inviting, the kind of feeling that makes you want to join in the bustling atmosphere.
The lobby itself is warm, anchored by a huge mosaic canvas that commands the space. No fancy carpet or pretentious decorations, just well-illuminated walls and sleek marbled floors. The check-in process is swift, and the next thing I know, I’m already waiting for the lift.

The Room
I always look at the view first in any hotel room that I enter. Because I’m on the 55th floor, the view is nothing short of commanding. But no, it's not close to the harbour; the height I am up at gives a feeling of a bird’s-eye view. The cityscape is magnificent with glimpses of the harbour just far ahead. The room is compact yet functional.
There is a chair and a sofa on one side, with two beds closer to the windows. What’s impressive is the long table in front of the beds. It ushers me in to work. The colour is warm and inviting. It’s dim but relaxing. The colours — different shades of brown — are calming while the carpet provides added comfort. I would have appreciated one more chair to be able to stretch my legs out.
One of the challenges for me when it comes to big rooms is how far things are. With my shorter stature, I have to take more steps just to reach the bathroom or the closet. The room's compactness allows me to skip all that. Moreover, the room eschews any fancy design, opting for functionality like a coffee machine, tableware, and a coffee table. Nevermind the grandeur touches, sometimes simple elegance is enough.

The Facilities
Hopewell Hotel has convenient access to nearby districts thanks to its strategic location in the heart of Wan Chai. That said, guests are tempted not to leave the area because of the hotel’s unrivalled convenience. The hotel is connected to the iconic Hopewell Centre, which itself has plenty of restaurants, shopping outlets, and entertainment facilities under one roof.
For the hotel itself, it provides over 6,500 square feet of column-free meetings and convention spaces. It can accommodate events of various sizes, welcoming up to 1,800 guests. In fact, the hotel is home to one of the largest ballrooms on Hong Kong Island. The hotel may not have its own spa, but its location makes sure that guests can still indulge in nearby wellness facilities. For those looking to enjoy it in the confines of the hotel, there is a sauna room and 20-metre swimming pool to freshen up. Otherwise, soak in the greenery at Hopewell Park, which is accessible from both Queen’s Road East and Kennedy Road.

The Restaurants
It’s easy to be lured into the nearby restaurants, but Hopewell Hotel has its own diverse range of culinary offerings that suit every occasion and palate. Hopewell Inn is the signature restaurant and offers Cantonese dishes. I opt for the “Taste of Shunde” menu because there aren’t many opportunities to try Shunde cuisine. In addition to this special menu, classic Cantonese dishes are available on the à la carte menu.
For breakfast, Lobby Cafe serves international and local favourites on a buffet. The options are plentiful, ranging from dim sum to classic Western breakfast picks. Applause goes to the culinary team for serving vegetarian, child-friendly, halal-friendly, and even gluten-free options for guests. Next door is the Lobby Bar, which presents a selection of cocktails, non-alcoholic drinks, and bar snacks. It’s a great spot for sundowners to enjoy a drink or two.

Hopewell Hotel in Hong Kong: The Verdict
Hopewell Hotel is unpretentiously elegant. It has a hint of classiness with added modern comfort that is ideal for solo and business travellers, as well as couples. Its location is ideal for those who value convenience and love being within reach of restaurants and even nightlife. In short, it’s affordable luxury.
