INTERVIEW
Any fashion connoisseur knows that shoes can make a loud statement to any outfit – especially when, in Vanda Novak's case, they feature sculptural details like orchid flower petals. Founded in 2018 by Dominika Nowak, whose decade-long tenure with prominent fashion houses in France and Italy lent her a seasoned eye for detail and innovation, the brand represents a tribute to Slavic heritage tailored for the cosmopolitan woman of today.
Crafted from the finest Italian materials and meticulously assembled in Poland, each pair of shoes embodies the essence of Polish craftsmanship. We sat down with the founder and designer Nowak to learn more about the story behind the brand – and its launch in Hong Kong.

What inspired you to establish Vanda Novak, and how does your background in global fashion influence the brand's identity and ethos?
After working for many brands, drawing dozens of shoe models every day, I found that such designs do not have the same value as well-thought-out ones, which sometimes take many months to create. I wanted to focus on timeless designs, well-thought-out classics but with a modern touch – shoes that women could wear on many occasions and for many seasons. I put a lot of emphasis on comfort. Vandy Novak shoes must not only be effective and elegant. They must be comfortable above all. A woman cannot be sensual when she feels discomfort because of her shoes.
Why did you choose to launch in Hong Kong?
Hong Kong is a wonderful multicultural place, where so many sometimes opposing worlds collide. For me, it is incredibly fascinating. I have spent a lot of time in such a mixed emigrant environment and it is incredibly close to me. I believe that such events, such chaos, give rise to incredibly interesting phenomena at every level of human development. In addition, I felt extremely honoured when Harvey Nichols Hong Kong purchased our collection made for AZ Factory.

Can you share some insights into the creative process behind merging Slavic heritage with modern design in your footwear collections?
I love to see opposites, which is probably why my designs combine often completely opposing ideas, styles and values.
I want to make shoes that are very sensual but comfortable, modern but referring to tradition, feminine and delicate but strong in expression. This seemingly irreconcilable dichotomy is what I am looking for.

What are the qualities you look for in shoes?
I look for elegance, femininity and comfort.
Who are your biggest inspirations?
The inspiration for my collections is sometimes a detail seen somewhere: architectural, in ceramics. It can be the finish of a garment, the handle of an umbrella… When it comes to people who inspire me, they are mainly strong women, actresses, activists, artists. Women who create, set trends not only in fashion but also in thinking about the world and perceiving this world.

In what ways does Vanda Novak contribute to promoting Polish craftsmanship and heritage on an international scale?
Vanda Novak's influence in promoting Polish heritage begins with the inspirational figure behind our brand: an exceptionally creative, artistic, and culturally driven woman named Vanda. However, our brand's efforts to showcase Poland globally extend well beyond her.
Our contribution can be summarised in two main dimensions. Firstly, we honour the legacy of Polish folk art by integrating it into our product designs wherever it complements the overall concept. Secondly, we build upon Poland's longstanding tradition of craftsmanship in shoemaking and leather-based products. This commitment ensures that our products not only embody quality but also carry forward a rich cultural heritage known for its excellence in these fields.
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the fashion industry. How does Vanda Novak integrate sustainability into its production processes and values?
The concept behind creating our brand was rooted in sustainability. I aimed to establish a brand that stands in opposition to fast fashion and premium brands that blindly chase trends, often introducing new products every season. Equally significant to me is the quality of the materials used in crafting our shoes. I prioritise natural components sourced from selected suppliers, with a focus on minimising chemical usage in leather tanning and galvanisation processes. All our components originate from Italy, and our shoes are proudly manufactured in Poland, ensuring both quality craftsmanship and a commitment to sustainable practices throughout our production chain.

Can you highlight any upcoming collections or collaborations that Vanda Novak enthusiasts can look forward to?
In our upcoming collections, I aim to broaden the brand's offerings by introducing new categories such as small leather goods and possibly jewellery.
What are three things you can't travel without and why?
When I travel, I always bring along versatile Vanda models that can be worn for various occasions. I prefer to pack lightly and fit everything into a cabin suitcase. Essential items for me include sunglasses, a pair of comfortable flip-flops, and a small leather purse that doubles perfectly as an evening bag.
