W Sydney – Hotel Review

SYDNEY

A hotel review of W Sydney

Sydney has no shortage of traditional luxury hotels on offer but stepping into the W Sydney lobby, I was filled with excitement and anticipation. With front-row seats to the picturesque Darling Harbour, the hotel promised not just a stay but a memorable journey.

Having only recently opened in October 2023, W Sydney's striking curved building was designed by local architect Hassell complemented with interiors by Bowler James Brindley. Drawing inspiration from the free-spirited "larrikin," the interior design marries playfulness with locally inspired decor, such as the Waratah petals (floral emblem of NSW) that adorn the welcoming lobby.

W Sydney boasts 588 stylish guest rooms and suites, each with breathtaking views of Darling Harbour. Upon arrival, we checked into the Spectacular Double Room. The journey to the guestrooms is an adventure in itself, with 'Tattoo of Stars,' a lighting constellation designed by Ukrainian-born Australian artist Stanislava Pinchuk, guiding the path.

The room pays homage to the beautiful waterfront setting with aquatic textures in shades of blue and white. Perhaps the most memorable element for us was the signature W cushion, shaped like a shark, perched upon each guest bed. The deep ocean blues of the bathroom extend the connection to the sea, while bursts of red and pink waratah flowers by artist Alesandro Ljubicic adorn the walk-in robe, adding a playful, larrikin-esque exuberance. With 168 exceptional studio and specialty suites, five supreme Wow Suites, and the ultra-luxe Extreme Wow Suite on Level 27, there's something for everyone.

During our stay, we visited the signature double-level bar 29/30 overlooking the 30-meter mosaic infinity pool. We sampled their curated cocktails and tapas, and we highly recommend trying the salt and pepper bay lobster, king fish crudo, and our pick of the cocktails, "Deception," with pineapple rum complemented by flavours of coconut and lemon. For dinner, we ventured over to their in-house restaurant, BTWN, which plays on its location between two expressways heading into the CBD. The menu focuses on highlighting local produce from NSW, with a strong emphasis on sustainability. The atmosphere was relaxed and buzzy, and our main dishes, the Bangalow sweet pork and Gundagai lamb rump, were delicious.

BTWN also transforms into a dessert bar by Janice Wong late into the night, offering a delightful array of innovative sweet treats. In the morning, the space transforms into a breakfast buffet, where we savoured fresh pastries, fruit, and other breakfast staples like made-to-order eggs, mushrooms, and toast. The breakfast was a perfect start to our day, offering a variety of delicious options to suit every taste.
