KUALA LUMPUR

Malaysia's first Waldorf Astoria replaces the former Hotel Istana with 268 suites, and opens on October 30

Waldorf Astoria is finally arriving in Malaysia. The all-suite Waldorf Astoria Kuala Lumpur opens on October 30, bringing the Hilton luxury brand's debut to the country's capital, with restaurants from two internationally known chefs and a spa and wellness complex that the hotel bills as one of Southeast Asia's most comprehensive.

A Familiar Address, Reimagined

The hotel stands at 73 Jalan Raja Chulan in Kuala Lumpur's Golden Triangle, a short walk from Bukit Bintang, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and the Petronas Twin Towers. The site is that of the former Hotel Istana, which closed in September 2021 after 29 years. Owner Tradewinds Corp Bhd has redeveloped it with Hilton into a 23-storey property. The hotel's general manager, Etienne Dalançon, describes the project as the "reawakening of a truly iconic address".

Design studios Deboss Collective and LW Design Group kept the original grand lobby and added artworks curated with the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia. The brand's signature Peacock Alley lounge picks up songket-inspired details and features a clock sculpture based on astrolabes from the museum.

268 Suites, From 80 to 745 Square Metres

Every one of the 268 accommodations is a suite. They start at 80 square metres for a one-bedroom and rise to the 745-square-metre Waldorf Astoria Suite, which includes its own gym, treatment room and private garden. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the city skyline, and the layouts are designed for both short breaks and longer stays. The hotel says its service is guided by Layan Tetamu, a Malaysian take on hospitality built on sincerity and intuition.

Dining With Michelin Chefs

Dining is led by Garima Arora, chef-owner of Bangkok's two-Michelin-starred Gaa, and Jean-Georges Vongerichten, of flagship New York City restaurant, Jean-Georges, which also holds two Michelin stars. Arora is behind Yaari, a modern Indian restaurant whose name means "friendship" in Hindi. It reworks regional classics and elevates street food such as chaats.

Vongerichten brings three concepts: JG KL, a seasonal restaurant blending French, American and Asian influences; abc kitchens KL, a plant-forward farm-to-table venue with Latin touches; and The Bar by JG, which pairs small plates with cocktails. More venues are expected to be announced.

A Wellness Destination Across Two Floors

The Waldorf Astoria Spa spans more than 2,275 square metres across two floors and is built around two ideas, The Science of Recovery and The Art of Longevity.

La Prairie treatments feature on the menu, along with a Kuala Lumpur-exclusive ritual inspired by the Malayan tiger that combines guided breathwork, massage and warmed tiger's-eye gemstones. There are seven treatment rooms, named Valley, Forest, Mountain, Lake, River, Meadow and Brook, plus herbal steam rooms, mineral salt saunas, vitality pools and an Oriental hammam.

A Wellness Studio takes a more technical approach. The hotel says it is the first in Malaysia with the complete Technogym Sand Stone Collection, and it adds an AlterG anti-gravity treadmill, ICAROS virtual-reality training, a cryotherapy chamber and a 3D posture analyser. There is also a 20-metre pool and an outdoor yoga pavilion.

Beyond the spa, the hotel plans a rotating Masters in Residence programme with visiting experts in areas such as osteopathy, Pilates and Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as a private wellness membership for residents. Suites come with yoga mats, a digital-detox card and an in-suite recovery kit, and the turndown service includes weighted blankets and a custom botanical fragrance.
