James Blunt has been back in headlines this week for reasons that have nothing to do with music. Following the death of actress Hayden Panettiere on August 16, 2026, online speculation spread linking Blunt to a disturbing account in Panettiere's memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she described being placed in bed as an 18-year-old beside an undressed "very famous" British singer-songwriter.
Blunt broke his silence on August 24, sharing a Substack article on X titled "Hayden Panettiere and James Blunt – An Internet Lynching," accompanied by a single eyes emoji. The article — written by journalist Dean Piper, who had covered Blunt and Panettiere's 2009 Cannes appearance together at the time — argued the timeline doesn't support the theory, since Panettiere was already 19, nearly 20, when the widely circulated photos of the two together were taken, while her account describes the incident as happening when she was around 18. Blunt has not commented further beyond sharing the article. Netizens are not convinced though. "Pointing out James associated with her at 19 instead of 18… How does that make Mr. Blunt Innocent?" wrote one user.
Amid the renewed attention on his personal life, here's what to know about his wife of over a decade, Sofia Wellesley.

Who is Sofia Wellesley?
Born Alexandrina Sofia Wellesley on July 23, 1983, Sofia is the daughter of Lord John Henry Wellesley and Lady Corinne Vaes, and the granddaughter of the late Valerian Wellesley, 8th Duke of Wellington — placing her firmly within British aristocracy, directly descended from the military and political Wellesley line. She grew up partly in Campanet, Mallorca, where her mother's family owned an estate, and attended a local international school there before going on to study law at the University of Edinburgh.

What Does She Do for Work?
Unlike many partners of famous musicians, Wellesley has maintained a serious independent career. She's a qualified attorney who has worked at a London-based law firm, and in 2016 was appointed to the board of Omnia Strategy, the legal consultancy founded by Cherie Blair. Interestingly, documents filed with the Law Society at the time listed her under the more formal spelling "Alexandrina Sofia Blount" — Blount being the older, more aristocratic spelling of her husband's actual surname, since James Blunt was born James Hillier Blount.

How Did She Meet James Blunt?
According to reporting from the time, James's sister Daisy introduced the pair in 2012. They dated for roughly a year before Blunt proposed in December 2013. The couple married in a private ceremony at a London registry office on September 5, 2014, followed two weeks later by a larger celebration on September 19 at the Marsana estate in Majorca, owned by Sofia's mother — the same region where Sofia had grown up.

Do They Have Children?
Yes, two sons, though true to form, the couple has never publicly revealed either child's name. James confirmed the birth of their first son in 2016, and has kept details of their second child similarly private.
What's Their Social Circle Like?
Sofia and James have moved in notably elite circles for years, partly through James's friendship with Prince Harry, whom he served alongside in the British Army before his music career took off. The couple attended Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's 2018 royal wedding, and have been photographed at events alongside figures including Sir Elton John and David Furnish.
