Forget the mass produced bags of coffee sitting on the supermarket shelves. For the ultimate home brewing experience, simply look to the talented community of local roasters crafting exceptional beans right here in the city. Whether you’re into complex single-origins to expertly balanced blends designed for your home espresso machine, here’s our pick of the best local roasters and where to find their award-winning beans.

Common Man Coffee Roasters

In Hong Kong’s coffee community, few names command as much respect as Common Man Coffee Roasters (CMCR). More than just a mere roastery, CMCR is an entire ecosystem dedicated to growing the specialty coffee culture through its cafés, academy, and wholesale operations. At their core is a profound commitment to ethical sourcing, celebrating the human impact from farmer to barista, and a mission to make high-quality coffee approachable and enjoyable. This philosophy is perhaps best understood through the lens of their two signature blends, each crafted with a distinct vision in mind.

The 22 Martin Blend is an homage to the classic, ubiquitous house blend. In a world of experimental processing, 22 Martin stands firm as a bold, comforting, and chocolatey option. With its robust nutty notes, it’s an impeccably balanced blend designed to be the perfect, reliable foundation for any milk drink, proving that tradition, when executed perfectly, never goes out of style. Our favourite though, is the Lucky Basterd Blend, inspired by combining less conventional components. It’s best described as a perfumey wild fruit jam or a berry-infused chocolate dessert. Imagine a luscious mix of rich, chocolatey base notes spectacularly intertwined with vibrant fruity and floral highs – a complex and thrilling experience for the palate.

Personal Best Coffee Roasters

As the name suggests, Personal Best Coffee Roasters is dedicated to helping you find your personal best brew. This award-winning roastery focuses on creating well-balanced, approachable blends that perform brilliantly across different brewing methods.

Their must-try blends include MUG-MUG, the signature espresso blend that also works beautifully for drip methods. It boasts a smooth body that can be enjoyed as both a black or milk coffee. This is an easy-drinking coffee that dials in easily on both professional espresso bars and home set-ups. Another highlight is the Tiara Espresso Blend – a wonderfully sweet and balanced combination of a natural process Catuai from Brazil for sweetness and full body, a chocolatey washed process Caturra from Colombia, and a naturally processed Ethiopia Heirloom for a dose of stone fruit complexity – perfect for your post-meal espresso.

Phoenix Coffee Roastery

For those who appreciate a company with a lovely origin story, Phoenix Coffee Roastery is a brand worth checking out. Founded in 2020 during Covid, founder Yat first started out serving hand-brewed coffee from a coffee bike in Peng Chau. Three years on, he began roasting his own coffee beans and has since quietly grown into one of Hong Kong's top coffee roasting companies supplying established chains and independent cafes alike with rich, flavour-forward blends that pack a punch.

We simply can’t get enough of their Black Cat Espresso Blend. This intriguing blend combines natural process beans from Brazil and Yunnan, resulting in deep, comforting cupping notes of toffee, walnut, chocolate, and a distinctive hint of red tea. It’s a wonderfully unique and satisfying cup.

Quality Life Coffee

Founded in 2019, Quality Life Coffee was established with a clear mission: to make exceptional, high-quality coffee accessible to everyone. This local passion quickly grew into a professional operation with the opening of their roastery in Shatin in 2020, allowing them to serve the city's coffee lovers with beans roasted to the highest specialty standards. Their commitment to freshness is paramount; every batch is roasted to order, guaranteeing the ultimate flavour in every bag.

Their dedication is evident in their diverse and extensive offerings. We had the chance to sample five of their distinct coffees from the selection, each showcasing a unique profile. The X8 Daybreak Fruity Blend is a wonderfully cost-effective daily brew, presenting a bright, fruity cup with notes of tropical fruit and berries. In stark contrast, the exquisite P23 Panama Boquete Esmeralda Private Collection Cañas Verdes Washed Geisha is a real treat, offering a complex symphony of floral, vanilla, and citrus notes with a beautifully smooth and dense mouthfeel. The E01 Ethiopia Yirgacheffe G1 Natural Hong Kong Fresh Roasted Coffee Beans is a classic example of the region, boasting delightful floral and citrus notes, while the single-origin V1 Hawaii Kona Beans provides a supremely balanced and viscous cup with flavours of caramel and orange peel. Perhaps most unique and our personal go-to is the X5 Osmanthus Winey Blend, which intriguingly combines beans from Ethiopia, Colombia, and Yunnan to produce pronounced and unusual notes of cinnamon, hawthorn, and wine.

NOC

A cornerstone of the Hong Kong coffee scene, NOC is an acronym for ‘Not Only Coffee’ — a philosophy that extends beyond the cup to encompass exceptional service, thoughtful design, and a calming atmosphere. This commitment to a complete experience is also reflected in their meticulous approach to roasting, best exemplified by their signature house blend, #18.

Named after the shop number of their Gough Street location, #18 is a heavy-bodied premium espresso blend designed for depth and balance. It combines natural Brazilian and washed Colombian Arabica beans, roasted to a darker profile to highlight notes of nutty and dark chocolate while maintaining a remarkably smooth, low-acidity finish. Its versatility is its greatest strength. The blend performs superbly whether pulled as a straight espresso, enjoyed as a rich Americano, or paired with milk, where its creamy, chocolatey characteristics create a perfectly balanced cup. Ultimately, #18 is the ideal choice for those who appreciate a classic, robust profile and a profoundly smooth drink. It is a definitive expression of NOC's curated quality.

18 Grams

Renowned for their meticulous sourcing and unique flavour profiles, 18 Grams is a must-visit. Their baristas are experts at guiding you to your perfect match. When asked for a recommendation for a sweeter, less acidic bean, they immediately suggested two delicious options that fit the bill.

The Big Bad Wolf Blend is a masterful espresso blend designed for sweetness and body, delivering rich, chocolatey notes with a smooth, low-acidity finish that's perfect for milk-based drinks. For a truly unique single-origin experience, try the Colombia La Marlen Natural Bean, which undergoes an anaerobic natural process to impart intense, winey sweetness and deep berry notes. It’s a complex yet incredibly smooth cup that leaves you wanting more with every sip.
