We've got a newfound soft spot for any hotel that wears its eco-consciousness on its sleeve and knows that it takes more than asking guests to reuse a bath towel to truly effect change. The 1 Hotels group is branded entirely around sustainability, which is apparent as soon as you pull up to the front door of any of its properties – which span from San Francisco to West Hollywood in the US, and a flurry of new openings to look forward to in Europe and Asia soon. For those looking for a sweet stay that is slightly alternative when in New York, then 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge is just the place.
The iconic '1' sculpture (this time, a more moody feel to fit the Brooklyn scene) greets you as you pull into the front drive, with the stunning Manhattan backdrop behind. Inside, the floor-to-ceiling windows offer picturesque views of the bridge – it really is spectacular. You’ll spot lots of reclaimed wood, vegan leather couches, fur throws and industrial accents, not to mention a farm stand with fresh apples in the lobby. Even the room keys are made of a variety of recycled wood.
The Rooms
We loved the sustainable details in all the rooms, including water glasses made of recycled green-glass bottles, and untreated-cotton plush bathrobes. If we were pressed to pick a favourite feature, we'd have to go for the freestanding filtered water dispenser in lieu of plastic bottles. All of the hotel’s sinks, taps and showers are equipped with Triple Clear water filters, so you can drink right from them. Glasses in the rooms are made from recycled glass. We were given the double king room on the 7th floor, which was cosy and warm with floods of natural light, incredible Manhattan skyline views and a killer deck chair to take it all in with.
Like the rest of the theme, the bed offered a fabulous fusion of comfort and eco-consciousness; the mattress, by Keetsa, is made of custom organic cotton, and the sheets are 100 per cent organic cotton, too. Oh, and four-legged guests will be treated to a den dog bed, all-natural dog treats, and rooms are fitted with a smart dog camera that lets you see, talk and even toss treats to your pup when you're not there.
Dining
The dining options at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge are varied, with their healthy all-day dining spot Neighbors, farm-to-table The Osprey and Harriet's Rooftop Restaurant for dinner. The eco-friendly trend continues here in the restaurants, with the bar menu at the latter featuring sustainable cocktails. Their delightful margarita and the skyline pair fabulously together – definitely a top pick for a date night.
Neighbors for breakfast offer an array of morning favourites; my personal picks were the classic New York bagel, overnight oats and protein smoothies. A little green oasis on the ground floor of the hotel, the breakfast bar is stocked with fresh and seasonal ingredients, salads and options for all appetites.
The Rest
1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge boasts a wide array of facilities, most impressively their incredible rooftop pool with views of Manhattan. There is also an on-site Bamford Haybarn Spa, a fully-equipped gym and a 50-seat screening room.
You can anticipate stellar service from the get-go until check-out. The staff are warm and obliging, hoping to make every stay comfortable and unforgettable.
There are really only a few things as "New York" as the 1 Hotel's location at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge. Stay here to feel like you’re among the coolest New York crew, with decent prices and phenomenal views.
