A Cosy Boutique Staycation at One96 Hotel

In a city full of luxury chain hotels, a handful of boutiques sit quaintly and are celebrated for their personalised services and feel-at-home vibe. Part of the National Hotels group—which also owns The Jervois, The Putman and 99 Bonham—One96 is a minimalist-designed, well-equipped hotel nestled in the hipster neighbourhood of Sheung Wan. We check in for a one-night stay at One96.

Location

One96 is an all-suite boutique hotel and is situated within easy walking distance of Central. Located in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong’s hipster neighbourhood, the hotel is surrounded by public transport options and taxis to explore the city. The popular party and dining scenes Soho and Lan Kwai Fong are also reachable by foot.

Design

The hotel is very sleek and clean, much like its sister properties which follow European-inspired interiors and minimalistic aesthetics. A particular highlight is the rooftop, which showcases all the views from the hotel in all its glory, in a peaceful, private setting (we were undisturbed when we were on the roof). One96 interiors were designed by esteemed architect and designer Norman Chan.

The Room

We stayed in the Harbour & City View Room, occupying an entire floor (all the suites do) and featuring a private lift. Adorned with floor-to-ceiling windows, the room was spacious and well-equipped with kitchen facilities (including a Nespresso machine), luxury amenities and plush bedding. Everything was sparkling clean and the little touches in the decorations made the room feel homey and welcoming whilst maintaining a five-star aesthetic.

The Facilities

There are no restaurants in the hotel, however, the concierge is more than happy to recommend their partner restaurants for breakfast options within walking distance (less than five minutes away each). Breakfast restaurants include Ask Cafe, Cafe Life Patisserie & Cafe, Barista Jam, The Cottage, House of Dim Sum, and Kaffeine—catering to all palettes from dim sum to classic eggs on toast. We tried Barista Jam for a delightful breakfast set which included coffee and soup.

Guests of the hotel have 24/7 access to the gym on the first floor of the sister hotel, The Jervois, 89 Jervois Street, only minutes away from the property. One96 has a business centre, lounge, and laundry/drying service.

Overall

If you’re looking for an independent, private stay in Hong Kong, National Hotels is the place to be. Everything is self-sufficient and if you ever need anything, the reception is welcoming and will recommend nearby restaurants and things to do. Unlike many chain hotels where everything is about the in-house amenities, One96 allows you to truly explore the city and the local businesses and artifacts.
