We visited PRIVATE i SALON's Central Building location last year for a balayage refresh, and it left enough of an impression that there was never really a question of where to go when it came time for another round. This time, though, the starting point was rougher: months of growth had left my roots extremely overgrown, and the length itself had gone dry and brittle — the kind of texture that makes you nervous about adding more colour on top rather than excited about it. We needed a genuine refresh, but one that would actually leave our hair healthier rather than just prettier for a week. So we booked back in with the legendary Wesker Kong for an ashy balayage with brighter, face-framing highlights, plus a proper cut and trim to deal with the split ends dragging the whole look down.

The Brief

Going in, we knew exactly what we wanted, but weren't entirely sure how realistic it was given the state of our hair. An ashy overall tone, with brighter highlights placed specifically to frame the face rather than scattered evenly throughout — plus a trim aggressive enough to actually get rid of the split ends, not just tidy them up. The concern, as always with balayage on compromised hair, was whether chasing that brightness would leave my hair in worse shape than it started. The Colour Process

For the balayage itself, Wesker's team used Milbon, Japan's No. 1 professional haircare brand — a detail that matters more than it might sound, since Milbon's formulations are built specifically around minimising damage during the lightening process rather than just delivering colour payoff on its own. Olaplex was worked in throughout the colouring process as well, there specifically to help strengthen and protect the hair's internal bond structure while the lightener was doing its job — essentially working the whole time to counteract the damage that would normally come with lifting hair to an ashy, brightened tone.

The placement itself was where Wesker's actual skill showed, and where the appointment felt most different from a standard salon colour job. Rather than an even, all-over application, the brighter pieces were placed specifically around the face, exactly as requested — the kind of targeted highlighting that does more for how a colour job actually reads day to day than sheer overall brightness ever does. Wesker worked section by section, checking placement against how the light hit the face rather than just following a template, which is the kind of attention to detail that's easy to take for granted until you compare it to a rushed job elsewhere. Blended against the ashy base tone, the contrast came out subtle rather than stark, which is exactly the effect that makes balayage look grown-out-gracefully rather than freshly done — soft transitions rather than visible lines of demarcation between old colour, new colour, and natural root.

Given how overgrown the roots were this time around, there was also more root-to-length blending work required than on our first visit, softening the harder line between old growth and previous colour so the whole thing read as one continuous, natural-looking result rather than a visibly "redone" head of hair.

The Finishing Steps

Before the blow-dry, the team applied the Premium Global Milbon Primer, a treatment step designed to deeply hydrate the hair, improve manageability, and reduce the damage that heat styling would otherwise add on top of a colour service. Given how brittle my hair had been going in, this felt like the step doing the most quiet, structural work of the whole appointment — the difference between hair that survives a blow-dry and hair that's actively protected through one. It's a step that's easy for a salon to skip or rush, and having it done properly showed almost immediately in how the hair handled the heat styling that followed.

The cut and trim rounded things out, taking a proper pass at the split ends rather than a token tidy-up. Wesker cut with the natural fall of the hair in mind rather than working to a fixed shape, checking length and layering at multiple points throughout rather than only at the very end. Combined with the colour work, the overall effect wasn't just brighter — it was healthier-looking hair, full stop, which was the actual goal going into the appointment.

The Result

Walking out, the ashy tone read exactly as intended — cool, soft, and well-blended rather than flat or grey-toned — with the face-framing highlights doing real work to brighten up the complexion without turning the whole head into a solid block of brightness. More importantly, given how dry and brittle the hair had been beforehand, it actually felt stronger and better conditioned leaving the salon than it had walking in, which is the real test of a colour service done properly rather than just a good-looking result on day one. Compared to last year's visit, this felt like an even more dialled-in version of the same formula — proof that a good stylist-client relationship compounds over repeat visits rather than resetting to zero each time.
