Summer in Asia is a test of endurance – not just for your spirit, but for your skin. Humidity turns smooth swashes into sticky messes. Air conditioning saps moisture. Sun exposure accelerates visible ageing. And the heat? It makes even the most dedicated among us want to abandon the whole process altogether.

The solution is not to do more. It is to be smarter. This summer, we have curated a lineup of brands and products that work with the season, not against it. From scientifically advanced serums to boost hydration to a natural deodorant that survives the MTR, here is the must-try summer skincare guide this summer in Asia, whether you're walking the streets of Hong Kong or sipping a cup of coffee in Hanoi.

Grown Alchemist

Australian skincare knows heat. Grown Alchemist, a Melbourne-based brand beloved for its scientific formulations and minimalist aesthetics, has built a reputation on products that perform without fuss. Their summer-ready lineup focuses on hydration, renewal, and protection – all delivered with the brand's signature botanical sophistication. Our personal favourite is the hydra-restore lip balm, formulated with Shea Butter, Watermelon, and Sweet Almond – a combination that conditions, nourishes and restores softness, with the most beautiful subtle scent of watermelon. Having used it religiously for the past month, we can confidently say our lips have never felt better.

Coconut Matter

Let us address the elephant in the room. Hong Kong summer + public transport + antiperspirant chemicals = a compromise no one wants to think about. Enter Coconut Matter's natural deodorant.

This plastic-free, aluminium-free deodorant is formulated specifically for hot and humid climates. The brand also has a variety of scent options to choose from, which are neither overpowering nor heavily perfumed - perfect for when your pits need a subtle pick-me-up. At approximately HK$140 per tube, we admit it is more expensive than a drugstore stick. But for something that works, smells beautiful, and does not involve aluminium or plastics? Consider it an investment in your sanity and your health.

Subtle Energies

For those who view skincare as a ritual rather than a routine, Subtle Energies' Facial Blend is a revelation. This is not a serum in the conventional sense. It is an ayurvedic-inspired facial oil that marries ancient wisdom with modern aromatherapy, designed to address skin health and emotional well-being simultaneously. The blend features Mogra (jasmine), Ashwagandha, and Sandalwood as its key active ingredients. Ashwagandha, an adaptogenic herb, helps regulate the body's stress response – and let us be honest, summer in Hong Kong can be stressful. Sandalwood provides a calming, grounding aroma. The texture is that of a dry oil – so it absorbs without leaving a greasy residue, making it suitable for summer use despite being an oil-based product. Apply a few drops after your serum, or mix a drop into your moisturiser.

Sunday Riley

Sunday Riley has become a cult favourite in the skincare world, and for good reason. Founded in 2009, this Texas-born brand operates on a simple yet powerful philosophy: "Powered by science, balanced by botanicals". In Hong Kong, where humidity and pollution can take a toll on your complexion, the brand's results-driven formulas offer a welcome solution. The star of the lineup is undoubtedly the Glow Goals set, the ultimate starter kit for anyone looking to harness the power of vitamin C without committing to full-sized products. This best-selling trio brings together three icons from the brand's C.E.O. collection: the C.E.O. Glow Vitamin C + Turmeric Face Oil, the C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum, and the C.E.O. Afterglow Brightening Gel Cream.

Augustinus Bader

Hong Kong's relentless heat and humidity can leave the delicate eye area looking puffy, tired and dehydrated, making cooling eye masks a summer essential. Augustinus Bader's The Eye Patches combine an instantly refreshing hydrogel texture with the brand's signature TFC8® technology to help revive the skin around the eyes in just minutes. Designed to target dark circles, puffiness and fine lines, the patches deliver a surge of hydration while helping to soothe redness and irritation — particularly welcome after long days outdoors, air-conditioned offices or long-haul flights. The biodegradable, vegan hydrogel patches are free from synthetic fragrance and other common irritants, making them a luxurious pick-me-up to keep in the fridge for an extra cooling boost during Hong Kong's hottest months.

The Science of "Thin to Thick"

The most important rule of layering is to apply your products from the thinnest, most watery consistency to the thickest, creamiest one. This is because thick creams and oils can block lighter serums and treatments from reaching your skin

Here's what a complete day-and-night routine looks like when you follow this principle. A good routine has no fixed number of steps—it should fit your skin's needs, so start simple and add products as you see fit.

Step

Morning Routine (AM)

Evening Routine (PM)

1. Cleanser

Start with a gentle cleanse to remove overnight oil and prep your skin for the day.

Remove makeup, sunscreen, and the day's buildup with a cleanser (often the first step of a double cleanse).

2. Toner

(Optional) Helps balance your skin's pH and can add a layer of hydration.

Same as morning. It preps your skin to better absorb the treatments that follow.

3. Treatment/Serum

Apply your active ingredients. This is where you target specific concerns like fine lines, dullness, or pigmentation.

This is the time for retinoids (vitamin A), as they work best overnight and can be degraded by sunlight. Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is another great option that works synergistically with retinoids.

4. Eye Cream

(Optional) A targeted cream for the delicate under-eye area can help with dark circles or puffiness.

Same as morning, applied before your final moisturiser.

5. Moisturiser

Seals in all the previous layers, adds hydration, and helps strengthen your skin's barrier.

Your final step. At night, you can use a richer, more reparative cream to support your skin's natural regeneration process while you sleep.

6. Sunscreen

The final and most critical step of your morning routine. It protects your skin from UV damage and all the hard work you just put in.

Not needed.

Pro Tips for Effective Layering

  • While the standard layering order works for most people, there's an exception for potent treatments like retinoids. The "open sandwich" method involves applying a lightweight moisturiser, then the retinoid, then your regular night cream. This technique has been shown to maintain the retinoid's effectiveness while significantly reducing dryness and irritation.

  • Be careful when layering strong actives. For example, applying a low-pH product (like an AHA/BHA exfoliant) at the same time as a retinoid can inactivate the retinoid and cause major irritation.

  • Give each layer about 30 to 60 seconds to absorb before applying the next one. This prevents "pilling" (when products clump up on your skin) and helps everything work better.
