Every puppy owner remembers the first grooming appointment. It is the first time your dog is handled by a stranger, dried by a machine she has never heard and asked to stand still while someone trims around her eyes and paws. For Taco, our goldendoodle puppy, it was all of that at once. We chose PRIVATE i PETS, the pet lifestyle and wellness brand with branches in Causeway Bay and Kowloon Tong, to get it right. She walked in a little nervous. By the time she left, she was excited. For a very first groom, I could not have picked a better place.

Its philosophy is "pets are family", and it says it tailors its services to each animal's individual needs. That positioning suited a first-timer. A salon that frames grooming as care, rather than just a trim, felt like the right place for a puppy who did not yet know what to expect.
Taco went in for a bath and a cut, the classic first-groom package. The standard grooming service includes:
Nail trimming and grinding
Paw pad, belly and sanitary trimming
Ear cleaning and ear hair removal

Bathing, blow drying and brushing
Light trimming of excess hair where needed
It is a thorough list, and it covers the areas that matter most for a long-haired breed: the paws, ears and eyes, where fur can build up and cause discomfort.
The best measure of a grooming session is the dog. Taco arrived hesitant, as most puppies would be on a first outing like this. When we picked her up, the nerves were gone and she was excited. It tells me she was handled with patience and that the experience felt safe to her, which is exactly what you want from a first visit.
Beyond the Basic Groom
PRIVATE i PETS offers more than baths and cuts, and some of it is worth knowing about for later.
Micro Oxyfresh Hydrotherapy. One of the brand's most popular services, this is a Korean micro-oxygen hydrotherapy treatment. PRIVATE i PETS says it produces oxygen bubbles as small as 5 microns, which reach into the hair follicles to cleanse and hydrate the skin and coat. It is suited to pets with sensitive skin, odour concerns or dull coats, and lists benefits including soothing red or itchy skin, reducing body odour and dandruff, and a softer, shinier coat.
Indoor dog swimming. The store has what the brand calls Hong Kong's first dog swimming pool inside a shopping mall, a temperature-controlled indoor pool. The combination of water play and low-impact muscle training supports strength, fitness and overall well-being. Taco is still very young, so swimming is something for later, but it is a good reason to keep coming back.
Tips for a First Grooming Session
These are general suggestions rather than anything specific to PRIVATE i PETS, so check with your salon:
Tell the groomer it is the first time. It helps them pace the session.
Ask what the haircut will look like. Bring photos if you have a style in mind.
Expect a tired puppy. A new routine can be a lot, so a quiet evening afterwards is a good idea.
